Chip Technology
1. What is a chip credit card?

A chip credit card is a credit card that is embedded with a microchip. This "chip" turns part of your Account info into a unique code when used at a chip-enabled register, adding an additional layer of fraud protection. Chip technology - also called EMV - is currently the global standard.

2. How do I use a chip card?

At chip-enabled registers, simply insert your card "chip first", and then follow the prompts. Nothing changes for phone and online transactions. And because all GM Rewards Cards are chip and signature cards, there is no PIN required! At registers that aren't yet chip-enabled, use your card like you always have - swipe and sign your name.

3. When will GM Rewards Cards have chip cards?

We will begin to issue chip cards in 2015 and expect to include the chip on many of our cards by the end of the year. If you currently have a GM Rewards Card, continue using it until you receive your new chip card.

4. Is there any difference between a "Chip and PIN" card and a "Chip and Signature" card?

Both Chip and PIN and Chip and Signature cards offer better fraud protection than traditional magnetic stripe cards when used at chip-enabled registers. The only difference is that the Chip and PIN card requires you to enter a PIN at checkout while the Chip and Signature card only requires your signature. GM Rewards Cards from Capital One chip cards will be Chip and Signature cards, so there's no additional PIN to remember.

5. What's the difference between "Chip" cards, "Smart Chip" cards and "EMV" cards?

Really, there's no difference at all. Chip cards, Smart Chip cards and EMV cards are names different companies use for the same security technology.

6. What is EMV?

EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard® and Visa®. It's a credit card that's embedded with a microchip.

7. Do I have to pay for the chip card?

No. There's no additional cost for the chip card. As a GM Rewards Cardmember, you should have the benefit of greater security without having to pay for it.
